5. Eden Hazard
Football has a funny way of messing around
with history, for three straight seasons, the sensational Belgian Eden Hazard
has had a direct hand in where the premier league title tilts and he’s just
done it again, with Westbrom hosting the blues in what proved to be the last
drop of the gush of everything brutal from the Stamford Bridge Landlords, the
mesmerizing Belgian stood up and got counted as resolute Westbrom went in to
act the spoilers. He may have had a season to forget last term, every Chelsea
player bar Willian did but from the word go this season he’s made amends in
emphatic manners, he added more goals to his game and comes good whenever the
big Brazilian upfront decides to go awol. It can be argued by critics but
expect the best of Hazard as it’s going to be upward and forward for him, with
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi gradually packing up with age, Neymar, Isco
and Dybala have Hazard to worry about when Ballon’dor is discussed.
4. N’golo Kante
He did it at once upon a time lowly Leicester City, he’s done
it again at highly fancied Chelsea. You’ll ask why it took
eternity for managers like Wenger and Guardiola who had
champions league football to offer to pounce on Kante before
Chelsea did, the elite football competition clause in his
contract placed those two at massive advantage considering
the presence of Wanyama, like for like at Tottenham. N’golo
Kante has justified his place in the squad, hitting hard at
opponents, breaking up plays and even managed to nutmeg Chris
Smalling for his only premier league goal this season, well
he did it again at the FA Cup quarter finals. There’s no
better ball retriever in the league than the Frenchman, his
presence in the Chelsea midfield speaks assurance and
steel... Thank you Ngo
3. Marcos Alonso
Sometimes underrated, this Serie A import brought something
different to Chelsea in all ramifications, fast, skilful and
strong, Marcos Alonso alongside Nigerian winger Victor Moses
are the reason Chelsea became invincible for long. It’s hard
to predict where they’ll attack you from with the outlets
that Marcos Alonso offers, in games against Arsenal at
Stamford Bridge and Manchester City home and away, the
Italian showed why he must be in the team of the season.
After Tottenham slipped at the Olympic stadium, Marcos Alonso
took on Middlesborough with high sense of urgency, linking up
like he’s a forward with a purpose and only needed few
seconds after the start to hit the crossbar, the intention
was clear from the word go. Chelsea have had great left
backs, from Greame Le Saux, to Celestine Babayaro, to Ashley
Cole, Alonso brought something different, something that has
been consistent since he came on after halftime at the
Emirates...
2. Ceazer Azpilicueta
If everyone does their job, diligently, there won’t ever be a
problem in any and every organization, familiar quote during
every motivation class, but one player that exemplifies
professionalism and accuracy of obligation delivery is Ceazer
Azpilicueta. From day one he’s been sensationally amazing,
doing the job required of him and one can’t place a streak of
bad performances from him. There’s no player more reliable at
Chelsea than the Spaniard, from the days he had to put up a
shift at right back because of the presence of Branislav
Ivanovic, to these days when he’s been moved to central
defence, Azpilicueta has performed incredibly well and
covered up when others fall flat. David Luiz, a more composed
and conservative version from the one we used to know in his
first spell and stand in captain, Gary Cahill deserve mention
but the assurance that Azpilicueta brings and his dexterity
in the art of defending makes him special. His crosses have
led to several goals, his timely blocks and intelligent
positional play have rescued Chelsea often, the blues will be
champions, much thanks to Mr Reliable... Ceazer
Azpilicueta.
1 Antonio Conte
The managerial crisis at Chelsea last season culminated in
the sack of Jose Mourinho and the hiring of damage control
specialist Gus Hiddink, with the Dutchman failing to sign an
extension, it was down to the owners to hire a new manager
who would halt the rot and reverse the tide, straight away
they gambled on Antonio Conte, the then Italian national team
manager and the rest is history. From the word go, the
premier league knew there was something different about the
high spirited manager, full of energy and ruthless in
decision making. Conte blew everyone off just after Arsenal
went three goals up in September, the Italian reversed to
three men at the back, a formation that took almost three
months to understand by competitors, with one shy of
Arsenal’s record, Tottenham ended the run but it’s the
Italian that would laugh last as he would be wearing the
winners’ medal at the end of the month and could be more with
his team being firm favourites in the FA Cup final against
Arsenal. His demeanour and disposition on the sidelines
explains why his players cannot allow laxity in games, he
celebrates better than the scorer, he’s a motivator, a
fighter and the difference in the title race
